THE NETHERLANDS

As mentioned earlier, the Koninklijke Nederlandse Corps Mariniers were one of the two first modern marine units and the foremost seafaring troops of the late 17th century. Today, the Corps maintains a force of approximately 2,800 troops that serve under the ultimate authority of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Corps contains a number of special combat battalions, including two main Marine battalions; infantry companies based in the Netherlands Antilles; and the anti-terrorist Marines Intervention Unit, which was formed in the wake of the hostage crisis of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. The Corps’ domestic operational units are based on Texel Island, in Doorn, and in Den Helder.
